— HGV & Trailer Brief

TPMS for Heavy
Goods Vehicles.

A UK-focused field guide for fleet managers: what TPMS is, the regulation that now governs it, the suppliers worth knowing, real pricing — and exactly what DVSA looks for at MOT.

— 01 / Architecture

What a fleet-grade TPMS actually is.

Type 01
Direct TPMS
Sensors mounted on or inside each tyre transmit live pressure and temperature data. The accuracy benchmark for heavy vehicles and the required architecture under R- 141.
Type 02
Indirect TPMS
Uses existing ABS wheel-speed sensors to estimate pressure changes via rotation. Lower precision uncommon on modern HGV fleets.
Type 03
TPRS / CTIS
Tyre Pressure Refill or Central Tyre Inflation systems automatically maintain set pressures. Recognised as functionally equivalent to TPMS under R-141.
— 02 / Regulation

UN ECE R-141 — now mandatory.

Aligned with the EU’s General Safety Regulation, R-141 requires direct, in-cab TPMS warnings on newly registered heavy commercial vehicles and trailers. UK approvals largely mirror this framework.
New HGV tractors

Must be TPMS-equipped from factory if registered after the implementation date.

Trailers & semi-trailers

Mandatory on new type approvals since Jul 2022 and on all new registrations from Jul 2024.

Older vehicles

No strict retrofit obligation — but best practice for DVSA inspections, insurance and uptime.

Equivalent systems

TPRS and CTIS that maintain regulated pressure count as compliant in place of a TPMS.

— Built for

Commercial-grade supplier landscape.

Fleets pursuing R-141 compliance should specify EBS-integrated hardware from established commercial suppliers — not consumer- grade retail kits.

— 05 / MOT & DVSA

Annual sensor replacement? No.

DVSA testers verify TPMS function — not calibration. A lit warning lamp or an inoperative system is a major defect. Sensors typically last 5–7 years and are replaced only on failure.

Do TPMS sensors need replacing every year?

No

Is TPMS checked at MOT / DVSA inspection?

Yes — function only

Will MOT fail if TPMS warning light is on?

Yes

Must older trailers be retrofitted?

No

Is sensor accuracy individually tested?

No

Typical commercial sensor lifespan

5–7 years
